WALKING THROUGH THE LIGHT TO RETURN TO THE ROOTS

Urban installation
Mixed-media sculptural object, fabric, white paint, and resin
200 x 170 x 10 cm

“Walking through the light to return to the roots” is an essay on memory and honors my Swiss-German roots. It evokes the inner potentialities we carry engraved in our DNA, and similarly how the symbolism of the circle (cell/seed) ultimately manifests the return to origins as enhancers and possible foundations of humanity. This project consists of an urban installation, composed of a central sculptural object (cell/seed) that floats like a germinating offering in the midst of an urban-industrial landscape; as a tribute to part of my paternal ancestors originating from those lands. I made a photographic record of the piece at different times of the day, to capture what happened inside it when sunlight passed through it, and how this affected the architectural environment and the different projections of its shadow; like invisible genetic forces that move us, traverse us, and take us to unexpected but ultimately necessary places. I am interested in highlighting what happens 'inside' the piece with the projection of the light that passes through it, as an organic and 'living' connection that manifests itself in the architectural and urban antagonism of the 'outside' that surrounds it. This "offering-work," initially, was intended to be completed in a performance where the piece is burned in the open, public landscape where it was conceived. This was accompanied by an Americanist shamanic ritual, thus transmuting it into metaphorical ashes (of light) that return to the earth, as a symbolic recognition of the memory of my ancestors. Due to various situations and unforeseen events, this offering mutated so that I could finally understand its true purpose: I had to donate it to the institution that hosted me during this internal process during this art residency in May, June, and July 2018, as a symbol of love and giving back to the earth of an important part of my ancestry.
